The Professional Artist
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
PROFESSIONAL... participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs.
Look Professional - Act Professional - Be Professional
In art, a professional is someone who is proficient in consistently producing high quality work, usually for money.
The opposite is an amateur, meaning someone who may not be qualified to be a professional and does not usually earn money from their work.
A professional possesses a large body of knowledge gained from extensive formalized academic study, apprenticeship or practical training in the processes and traditions of fine art, illustration, design and related disciplines. BUT, the artist's natural talents/skills, and consistent desire to learn and improve are just as important as formalized academic study or other training.
A 'true' art professional must be able to consistently produce high quality work in his/her creations, products, services, presentations, research, or other endeavours related to art and it's usefulness in the marketplace.
